GENESIS CHAPTERS 1-2 INTRODUCTION

There are many stories and beliefs about how the world was created, who created it, and why it was created. However, as believers in God and His Word, we have to just take some things by faith. By faith we know that God created everything, all of the stars in the Heavens, Earth and everything else. Faith is when we believe in someone or something and not, as we think seeing it with our eyes or ability to touch it. In this case though, we see the things that God has created and we are able to touch it also.

We have heard or been asked the question, “Where did God come from”. God just has always been. That is what we know by faith. There are many theories such as the “big bang” theory. This theory says that once upon a time there was a big bang and everything just fell into place. If you believed this theory you could believe you could put all of the parts of a car in a giant tumbler and that one day it would all come out together, all in one piece, and running! That just couldn’t happen.

God begins His Book, the first Book of the Bible, with a book named Genesis. This word Genesis means Beginning. This is the beginning of everything. The book of Genesis tells us many stories with many characters and it takes place over a long time span. Some of these people we are familiar with and some we don’t really know much about. That is why we study God’s word.

In the first chapter we read about the power of God when we read the words “And God said” or “Then God said”. This term is used 9 times in Chapter 1. This tells us the miracle of God making the Heavens and the earth. God simply spoke them into being. He had no machinery it was just God’s word. This is something no other creature can do. Only God can create something from nothing!

In Chapter 1, verse 26 God tells us about His creating man in His own image and He gave man all of the animals on the earth and all of the plants on the earth for food, verses 29-30.

In Chapter 2, verse 8, God planted a garden on the earth and He called the garden Eden. In this garden, God placed man whom He had formed.

In verses 10-11, we are told of the rivers God called Pishon that flowed through the garden. It went through the entire Garden of Eden. The second river was named Gihon. The third river God named Tigris and the fourth river the Euphrates.

In Chapter 2:21-23, God created a woman to be with Adam. God put Adam to sleep and took one of his ribs and He created a woman. In Chapter 2:23, Adam called her woman. In verse 24 there is a phrase still used today in many weddings today. The verse says, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” This was the beginning of the family. God is the One who created the family. Notice that God says man shall leave his father and mother and they shall become one. At that time, there was no one else on the earth but God knew what would eventually become of man and woman.

GENESIS  CHAPTERS 1-2

The Book of Genesis is full of stories everyone already knows like Adam and Eve, Noah’s Ark, Jacob, and others. We just want to fill in a few blanks that you might not know but would be interested in. All you have to do is to listen and fill in a ____blanks to get a ______of answers.

Genesis is the first book in our Bible and it gives us the foundation for___________. God made the ___________ and the_________. Some may ask “Where did God come from.” God has __________been. God did not come from anyone or anything because He just always was and is and is to come!

In the first Chapter of Genesis there are two phrases used nine times. It is “Then God said” or, “And God___________.” Let’s look at these verses:

                 VERSE                                 WHAT GOD SAID

There was no machinery, no tools, no building equipment of any kind, just God. No one, or no thing that has ever been, could do what God has done. Many have tried, all have failed.

In Chapter 2 God gives Adam a place to live. He calls this place Eden. Then in verses 10-14 God tells us about the _________that ran through Eden. Let’s read a few verses. In verse 20 Adam _________all of the birds and the livestock in the Garden of Eden. In verses 21-23 of Chapter 2 God creates a ________to be with Adam. Then in verse 24 we see a phrase that is used many times when a man and a woman are married. Let’s read these verses. Next week we will talk more about man and woman in the Garden of Eden.

MEMORY VERSE: “God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female he created them.” GENESIS 1:27
