Ezra Bible Study

The Book of Ezra begins as no other book in the Bible does. 'In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah, the LORD moved the heart of Cyrus king of Persia to make a proclamation throughout his realm and to put it in writing” (1:1). If you go back to 2 Chronicles 36:22 you will find the same verse.

It is possible that Daniel witnessed to Cyrus, the king of Persia, because Cyrus refers to God in a very favorable way. ''The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and he has appointed me to build a temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah'” (Ezra 1:2). God must have touched the heart of Cyrus because Cyrus even gave the people all the inventory of the Temple, as well as livestock, to take back with them.

Chapter 2 lists the exiles who had come back from captivity and returned to Jerusalem and Judah. The list is very precise; we are even told how many men, singers and servants returned.

Jeshua, his fellow priests and Zerubbabel led the people in building the altar of the Lord. 'Despite their fear of the peoples around them, they built the altar on its foundation and sacrificed burnt offerings on it to the LORD” (3:3). When the builders laid the foundation of the temple, the priests and Levites sang with praise and thanksgiving to the Lord (vv. 10-11).

In chapter 4 we are told that Israel's neighbors opposed the building of the temple and tried to discourage the Israelites. 'They hired counselors to work against them and frustrate their plans during the entire reign of Cyrus king of Persia and down to the reign of Darius king of Persia” (v. 5). Some time later, King Darius issued a decree to finish the Temple. 'Let the temple be rebuilt as a place to present sacrifices” (6:3).

In chapter 7 Ezra returned home to Jerusalem to teach the law of God and serve as a priest in the Temple. Artaxerxes was now king of Persia.

In chapters 9 and 10 Ezra writes about the intermarriages that had taken place between the Jews and their idol-worshiping neighbors. The names of the people who were guilty of intermarrying are even listed (10:18-44).
