Exodus 32-40

While Moses was up on the mountain with God, the people became very impatient. It is human nature to want something right now. They went to Aaron and said, ''Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don't know what has happened to him'” (32:1).

How did Aaron respond? He took all the gold they brought him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf. He also built an altar in front of the calf and told the people there would be a festival. The next day they sacrificed burnt offerings and drank and had a wild party (32:6).

Of course God saw and heard all that was going on with the people. He told Moses that the people had become corrupt. They were disobeying what He had commanded them to do. In verse 9 God called them a 'stiff-necked” people. He wanted to destroy them all and make Moses into a great nation. But Moses spoke in behalf of the Israelites. He told God that the Egyptians would say that it was with evil intent that God had brought the Israelites out of bondage. So the Lord listened to Moses and did not bring His wrath on the people.

Moses went down the mountain with the two tablets that had been written by the hand of God. When he saw the calf and the people dancing 'he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain” (32:19). Moses took the calf and 'burned it in the fire; then he ground it to powder, scattered it on the water and made the Israelites drink it” (v. 20). In verse 33 God told Moses, ''Whoever has sinned against me I will blot out of my book.'” Then the Lord struck the people with a plague.

Again in chapter 33 God called the Israelites a 'stiff-necked” people (v. 3).

Whenever the people had a petition to take to the Lord they had to take their petitions to the 'tent of meeting,” which was pitched outside the camp some distance away from everyone else. 'Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people rose and stood at the entrances to their tents, watching Moses until he entered the tent” (33:8).

In verses 12-23 Moses talked with God. He asked to see God's glory (v. 18). But God told Moses that no one could see His face and live (v. 20). In verses 21-23 God said He would place Moses in the cleft of a rock and cover him with His hand and Moses would see God's back; but His face must not be seen.

At the beginning of chapter 34 the Lord told Moses to chisel out two new tablets and He would write His commandments on them to take the place of the first tablets.

When Moses came down from the mountain with the tablets, his face was radiant and everyone was afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them and gave them all the commands the Lord had given him. When he finished speaking to them he put a veil over his face.

In chapter 35 the people brought offerings to the Lord for the work on the tabernacle and the items that would be placed in it. Then Moses summoned 'every skilled person to whom the Lord had given ability and who was willing to come and do the work” (36:2).

When the tabernacle was completed, Moses inspected the work and saw the Israelites had done it just as the Lord had commanded (39:43). After all the items were placed in the tabernacle, 'the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. Moses could not enter because the cloud had settled upon it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle” (40:34-35).
