Exodus 21-31

Many people don't know that while Moses was on Mount Sinai with God, he received more than the Ten Commandments. God gave him many other laws and regulations on how the Israelites were to conduct themselves in their daily living.

In chapters 21 through 23 God gave the law of Hebrew servants, the law of personal injury, the law of protection of property, the laws of social responsibility and the laws of justice and mercy.

In chapter 25 God gave Moses specific instructions for collecting offerings for the tabernacle. He also gave Moses instructions on how to build the tabernacle and the items that would be placed in it. The tabernacle was, for the lack of a better term, the portable temple.

In verses 10-22 God gave instructions for building the Ark of the Covenant. He told Moses the exact size, the specific wood to use and how to make the poles to carry the Ark and the decoration for the Ark. Next, God described how to construct the table and the lampstand to put into the tabernacle. He also described precisely how to make the curtains for the tabernacle (26:1-14).

In chapter 27 God told Moses how to build the altar of burnt offering and how to make a courtyard in the tabernacle. He even described the oil that was to be burned in the lampstands. He gave instructions for making the priestly garments (chapter 28) and for consecrating the priests (chapter 29). In Chapter 30 God explained in detail how to make the altar of incense, the basin for washing, the anointing oil and the incense.

The last thing God talked to Moses about was the Sabbath. "‘The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant. It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he abstained from work and rested'" (31:16-17).
