Ecclesiastes: Introduction

King Solomon wrote the Book of Ecclesiastes when he was an old man. He tells us that if we try to live our lives without God, then we have no purpose or hope. A life without God is empty and meaningless. ''Meaningless! Meaningless!' says the Teacher. 'Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless'” (1:2). The King James Version uses the word 'vanity,” which means 'empty, purposeless, worthless,” 37 times.

Solomon knew what he was talking about. Even though he was the wealthiest man in the world and had everything he could want, he was not really happy. He 'devoted himself to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under heaven” (1:13). He pursued pleasure and undertook great projects, building houses, vineyards, gardens, parks and reservoirs. But he concluded that without God, 'who can eat or find enjoyment? To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness” (2:25-26).

Solomon saw the errors of his life, the things he had done that did not please God. He tells us that loving wealth and pursuing possessions is meaningless. Life cannot be truly fulfilling without God.

God hears our prayers and He knows what we need. Sometimes we don't receive what we pray for because God has our best interests at heart. He wants us to put our hope in Him, rather than in our possessions.

In chapter 12 King Solomon says, 'Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come” (v. 1).

Finally, Solomon sums up everything: 'Here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil” (12:13-14).
