Amos Bible Study

Before God called Amos to be a prophet he was a shepherd, and he also took care of sycamore-fig trees (7:14-15). The name Amos means 'burden” or 'burdenbearer.” Although Amos was from Judah, God called him to prophesy to the Northern Kingdom of Israel.

Amos ministered during a time of prosperity, corruption and injustice. The people were not listening to God. The main theme of the Book of Amos is 'Look out Israel, here comes God's judgment!”

In the first two chapters Amos foretells God's judgment on Israel's neighbors: Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, Ammon and Moab. Then he turns his attention to Judah and Israel. The people were worshipping idols and had rejected the law of God; they were oppressing the righteous, mistreating the poor and depriving them of justice.

Chapter 5 is a cry or lament and a call for Israel to repent. Amos tells the people, 'This is what the Sovereign Lord says: 'The city that marches out a thousand strong for Israel will have only a hundred left; the town that marches out a hundred strong will have only ten left.' . . . 'Seek me and live'” (5:3-4).

The people had turned away from righteousness. Amos tells them, 'Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is. Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the Lord God Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph” (5:14-15).

In verse 18 Amos asks, 'Why do you long for the day of the Lord? That day will be darkness, not light.” The Lord says that He will not accept the people's offerings and sacrifices because of their idol worship. ''I will send you into exile beyond Damascus'” (5:27).

Chapter 6 begins, 'Woe to you who are complacent in Zion, and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria.” The people were smug, self-satisfied and unconcerned. This verse could also describe many people and churches today that are just relaxing and not working for the Lord.

In chapter 7 Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sends a message to King Jeroboam stating that Amos is raising a conspiracy against him. Then Amaziah tells Amos to go back to Judah. ''Don't prophesy anymore at Bethel'” (7:13). Verses 16-17 contain God's response to Amaziah.

God declares that He will send 'a famine of hearing the words of the Lord” (8:11). The people would search for the word of the Lord, but they would not find it.

In chapter 9 the Lord tells the people that He will shake Israel, and all the sinners among them will die by the sword, 'all those who say, 'Disaster will not overtake or meet us'” (9:10). But later He will restore Israel. ''I will bring back my exiled people Israel; they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them'” (9:14).
