Sharing the Vision

You have probably seen one just as I have - a cap with two bills; pointing in opposite directions. The cap usually has a logo included, something like "I'm the leader, which way did they go?" or "I'm confused, do you know where I'm going?"

When I see a cap like that, I cannot help but be reminded of the church. Where are we going? Why is everyone going in a different direction? Why doesn't everyone understand what they are supposed to be doing? Why don't the leaders do something? Why don't the followers follow the leaders?

In most churches, there are many different ideas about the direction the church is going, or should be going. Despite the fact that regular re-evaluation is recommended for success in our individual lives, many churches seldom have conversations about such things. This indicates to me that it is a good idea to refocus periodically on our emphasis as a congregation.

We are in the process of writing a mission statement, vision statement, value statement, and motto. An initial proposal has been drafted, and we will pray regularly this fall about the direction God wishes us to go.

Let me encourage you to think about the following questions.

1. What do you believe is the current stated or unstated mission of our Church? Explain your answer if necessary.
2. What are the unchanging core values of this church?
3. What are the components of the core belief system of this church?
4. Which are our strongest ministries?
5. Which are our weakest ministries? Which of these would you help expand or improve?
6. What ministries do you believe we should add? What role could you play?
7. If this Church went out of existence tomorrow, who would miss us? What difference would it make in our town? our County? State? Our nation? Our world?
8. What do you believe should be the stated purpose(s) of our Church?
9. What is your vision (your fondest hopes or dreams) for this church?
10. What things do you think must be included in an updated mission statement for the church? (including both current and new areas of emphasis)
